Collagen remodeling at the micro level

April 14, 2014

Cells in living tissues control their own environment. They can remodel their surroundings by synthesizing and degrading extracellular matrix fibers or by pulling at these fibers via adhesions between the cells and the matrix. Researchers in the Cell and Tissue Engineering laboratory at the Eindhoven University of Technology investigate how cells in cardiovascular tissues (shown in blue) synthesize and remodel their own environment in order to grow living tissues with an organized and load-bearing matrix structure (shown in green).Animation: ICMS Animation StudioVoice-over: Matthew F.
